I watched the original Dracula (from 1931), and I really love Renfield as a character. He's awesome.

The goddamn notorious piebandit stole ALL my pies, so I had to level up my superman suit a little bit, so I can take them back.

Took the opportunity to try a more advance colour technique (I do that sometimes). It really forces you to focus on the colour when you don't have any outlines to go by, I recommend you try it too.

I have been stricken by the feeling of not being able to draw, and it sucks. Hence the lack of updates here. And before you scream at me "YES YOU CAN DRAW"; no. When I feel like I can't, I can't. I draw things and throw them away, time and time again, and it makes me sad.

Anyway, here are a few things I HAVE drawn that looks good enough. The first one is me as a superhero, for Mike's artjam, the second one was supposed to be Douglas from IT-crowd, but it doesn't look like it and I never finished it.

I wanted to depart from my usual way of drawing characters a bit (i.e. bodies that try to follow the proper anatomy of humans, but in a stylized fashion), and do something more Stephen Silver-ish. Granted, he draws beautiful proper anatomy too, but his usual style is very much characterized of bodies built up using simple shapes, and tangents to its advantage (at least, that's the conclusion I've drawn...). To say the least, it's very animation-y (which shouldn't come as a surprise...).

So I started drawing a little bit, and ended up with this team:

You may know that character design is one of my true loves. I love coming up with characters, and drawing them. I think a good character can easily carry a story far. When I draw, I usually tend to just draw something random, and see what happens, but this time I thought about the stories behind the characters, and how they could be interesting in their fiction.

Richard "Dick" Rigid is obviously the main badass of this team. He's also madly in love with Bill, the lieutenant. He walks around topless in the office solely to get Bills attention. Clara Page is a reporter and journalist, and is also in love with Bill. She mostly wants to steal him away from Dick though. Rooster is a homophobe, and doesn't know his partner is gay. Dick's afraid of conflicts (emotional ones - not, like, fist fights and shit), and hasn't had the heart to tell Rooster that. And Bill Pendulum, yeah, why does everyone love him? Honestly, I have no idea.

And that's what went through my head when I drew this. Now, I'm looking for someone that wants to buy the rights to make a show out of this, and give me one million dollar for it. We can call it "Hard time" and make it an half-an-hour show.

The kids are gonna love it.

The Mafia 2 demo was released short time ago on Steam. I LOVED the first game, but wasn't overly excited about the sequel (uhm, not to say I wasn't... unexcited), but once I downloaded it and played thorugh... well...

...DAMN, I can WAIT until it's released now. Haven't had this much fun with a game in quite some time now.

The random playboy magazines that you could pick up was a bit surprising though, but it's a strangely effective way to get you to care about the collectibles.

Yes, I like it so much I made a comic. When I like things, I make comics.

Identifying your shapes

Something that's very common to read in any sort of book about drawing (at least books about drawing comics/cartoons), is about the importance of identifying your shapes, i.e. breaking everything down to simple spheres, cubes, cylinders and cones. When I was younger, I used to disregard that. I mean, it sounds so boring, doesn't it? Who wants to draw shapes; I wanna draw characters and COOL stuff. Not geometrical shapes.

However, the more I've practiced to draw, the more I've realized what a huge favor you do yourself by breaking down everything into shapes. I now feel that identifying your shapes is one of the most important things you do while drawing, so I'm gonna go over and show how I do it.

1. I start as usual with a circle for the head, so I can measure up the head to body ratio. As I've said before, I usually do a 1/5 ratio, which in real life is the aspect ratio of a child, more or less. I like too keep the head big though, even for adult characters. Anyway, I then do a simple stick figure to get all the parts out quick.

2. I then flesh out all the lines and work on the silhouette. It doesn't take more than a few minutes to get this far, and approaching the drawing this way, makes the silhouette very defined (or, at least easy TO define), and it gives you a very good base for the finished drawing. You can basically see if anything is out of proportion all ready and fix it, so you don't have to deal with it later.

3. This is where the shape identification begins, and thanks to the well defined silhouette, this is also the FUN part! I basically just go over it and get all the lines out, joints makes for circles, legs and arms becomes cylinders (or just lines connecting the joints). Be careful not to ruin the silhouette or create tangents. When doing things like the legs, I find it easier to do the joints first, and then connect them by drawing in the legs.

4. And that's basically it. I filled in the lines one more time, cause I like to have a well defined sketch to go by when inking, but I guess there wasn't to much reason too. Though, I had to add clothes and a face to the sketch before inking it too, obviously. So, a few details later:

This month's art jam is about drawing Felix the Cat, and I thought I'd show you all how I tackled that task, and ended up with the final drawing.

My initial approach was to do what I usually do, draw the character, but in my own style. I.e. approach it like it was my own character. In the first sketches (in the top left corner), I tried to get a feel for how what basic shapes Felix is made of. He's a very simple character, but still kinda hard to "get right". Though, I think most classical cartoon characters are like that.

Anyway, I wasn't sure if my style fitted or not, but I moved on to try and draw him in different poses and in different angles, and nothing seem to look that great. Plus, I couldn't come up with a good pose, or how I wanted him to look (evil? heroic? just plain?).

I decided to try mimic his style instead of impose my own on him, but I also knew it'd be a bit boring if it was just him, in his style. I mean, that's how every other image of him is, so what's the point? So I did the only sane thing I could think of.

And dressed him up like Super Mario.

Back in the dark September of 2005, I was introduced to comics of the web, more specifically a little webcomic called Ctrl+Alt+Del. I still remember exactly what strip I was greeted by the first time I visited the site.

The 16 year old me was amazed.

“FREE comics, on MY internet?” I thought. “I NEVER!”

But it was true.

This was back in the days when we still had a dial-up modem, and every time of the day when cranked up the Internet for some surfing, I'd click through the archives of said comic.

Here was a comic about video games and things that I cared about, it wasn't like a typical print comic; of course I loved it. But what amazed me the most about it, was the ability to, with one click, see and appreciate the difference in artwork, and how far the artist had gotten since he started out. I loved seeing progression back then, and I still do.

Today I'm aware of a lot of the amazing webcomics out there, and also about the fact of how hated Ctrl+Alt+Del is by other artists (granted, most of those complaints may be legit). I barely read it anymore, but I still find myself in the habit of defending it whenever someone critics it.

Anyway! (tl;dr: my life story)

In 2006 I decided to create my OWN comic in the vein of CAD, i.e. about games. With print screen-backgrounds.

I really wanted to print a shirt with the Powerpuff Girls on, cause it'd look awesome. But I was worried about the copyright issues, so I decided to draw them from scratch:

I looked at a lot of references though, to get the style right. Now I'm not sure if I will print it, cause it doesn't feel good enough. Don't get me wrong though, I think it looks almost spot on like original PPG-artwork, it's just that the poses are really stale.

Uti Vår Hage by Krister Petersson is one of my favorite swedish comics, so I decided to draw the main character, Faló.

He usually looks like this:

So anyways, I sketched him. He looked very much like a alcoholic, but it was still a very nice sketch. So I inked it (which I haven't done to any drawing in a long while now), and I finally feel very comfortable inking again. And last I coloured it. Now, why am I telling you this?

Well, because I wanted to point the notable, and very nice difference between every step. Look here:

It's interesting, now when I'm done, to see all the changes I made. I actually think it's important to change something all the time, otherwise you just end up tracing and lose all the energy in the drawing.

Anyway, enough ranting about that. I might post a bigger version of the coloured one later.

First of all, sorry for not posting a lot lately. I've been having some computer problems, and had to replace my mother board and reinstall windows a couple of times, so... yeah. But I'm back now.

I've started reading Hanteringen av odöda ('Handling the undead') by Johan Ajvide Lindqvist, and I'm really liking it so far. In one chapter (don't worry, I'm not gonna spoil much), an old guy called Mahler decides - after thousands of dead have awaken again all over Stockholm - to dig up his recently decease grandson and see if he, too, has awaken. In a frenzy, he digs up the entire grave with his bare hands, and suddenly realize how hard it is to get the coffin up.

And also that he might not even get HIMSELF up from the hole he's dug.

That scene gave me plenty of images in my head, so I decided to do a really quick sketch.

Feels nice to be drawing again.

Looking through some old stuff, I found a notebook with writings from when I was somewhere between 11-13 years old (I think). I and three classmates had decided we wanted to start a band (even though neither of us could sing NOR play. Anything). Anyway, I wrote the track list and started on a few lyrics, as I was the obvious word-smith of the band.

As you can probably tell:

"We walke too the school. Evry day. We do stuff thet we do not want too. the school is over and we walke home and the bag is heavy"

This is actually quite profound. And a bit reminiscent of Linkin Park, if I may say so myself.

More figure studies today, this time using drawings from a certain potato farm girl as guides.

I effin' LOVE Brianne Drouhard style and colour and everything about everything she draws ever. She draws the pretties girls. Hell, just look through her blog and be amazed at how well she colours with... markers?! Or something. Regardless, it's amazing. I can't colour anything close to that good even when using a computer.

Anyways. I traced the shit out of her shit.

She's insanely good at anatomy, especially the stylized kind, and that's exactly what I want to learn. So I think I got more out of this than tracing Silver, cause Drouhard's way of drawing is more what I'm used too. With that said, I guess I really need to learn more from Silver too.

Everything in red is simple tracing, the blue parts are parts where I had to "make up" the lines myself, cause they where mostly covered in clothes/dresses and such (hence why almost all the pelvis-parts are blue. She needs to draw more naked things *cough*)

In order to get better at drawing, I need to acknowledge what I need to work on, and actually work on that. And I think the best way to learn is to study what others have done; pick apart their artwork and understand how and why it works. So I'm gonna start doing that, by doing something as awful as just blatantly trace artwork from people I admire.

So this I'm gonna be making several posts like this, hopefully, with tracings of others art. First out is the animation guru Stephen Silver:

I'm sure you can find the image I traced from if you google his name. Stephen art is AMAZINGLY dynamic and... unstatic (I'm the master of tautology, thank you). And it's very expressive, you can almost tell what type of character it is just by looking at their shape. Even their silhouettes are expressive.

When dissecting his art, it's easy to tell it's built up by a few really simple shapes. When I was done, I tried sketching two drawings of my own (in blue) with the same process so to speak. It doesn't look as good, but I'm gonna keep practicing.

2 weeks ago I made a totally rad drawing of a totally rad guy, mostly known by his mortal name "Mike".

When I was done, I really felt that I needed to give it too him, so I later did.

I should totally start selling watercolour paintings once I get the hang of it. As of now, I've just been giving them away. Though, I really like that too. Much less pressure, and makes for cheap gifts.

Mr. Freeze is one of my all time favorite villains, and he has been ever since I saw the Heart of Ice episode of Batman TAS.

I wanted to make my own version of him, but failed. It turned out decent after the inking regardless, but still very similar to the original Mignola version. Oh well, nothing wrong with that. But I may redraw him later.

A completly unrelated title

Talking to Michael yesterday about his store with more than fair prices and amazing and hip items for sale, made me remeber back in the days when I started Glitchtown. This was back in 2008 when Webcomics Weekly and How To Make Webcomics was all in the rage, and I made a pretty funny strip about a certain typo in said book. I was so happy when even Brad Guigar himself wanted to order a print of that strip.

Anyway, back then I was thinking about opening up a store of my own, mostly cause I wanted to do a shirt based on the whole Unsharking thing. I still think the print I had in mind looked pretty decent. I never showed it to anyone back then, and the idea kinda died out, but I thought I could show you now instead.

I and my fellow friend and camera enthusiast Jacob did a hostile takeover of the school's photo studio today. For photoing, you see.

Alas, our creative ideas disappeared at the blink of an eye - or perhaps there never were any there to begin with - so we started doing all sorts of weird stuff.

In our mind weird stuff may or may not equal creativity. It's hit and miss, you never know.

Like, say, pointing down an empty plastic box. Creative? Meaningful? Who are you to judge? It's not for the critics eyes. It's way beyond that. Beyond criticism.

I brought my hat and 'stache though.

I needed to look amazing.

Should be worth noting that Jacob has taken all of these pictures. Except this one:

I've watched Sherlock Holmes twice now. It's an entertaining movie, maybe not as much Holmes-y as I'd want to but whatever. Anyway, I effin' LOVE the Victorian era and everything about it.

Rather than say that these are caricatures, I'll take the Stephen Silver-approach and say that I've made characters of people. See, by saying that, I can get away with them not actually looking anything like they do in real life. Clever, hurr derp.

I also made a comic based on a conversation I had with Mike about his remote fire (i.e. a fireplace turned on with a remote). The joke was lost in the land of Internskämt, but it's pictures and words - and I know how much you love that. Click for fullview.

Taking me for a ride with all the feelings I possess

Despair's way down the back, just hoping to chime in
Hate's there too, with a smile turned to a grin
Insecurity felt sick and threw up over the seat
Annoyance just can't stop complaining about the heat

Happiness' locked up doing coke in the bathroom
Just trying to earn his own name, I would assume

Depression's sitting next to me, looking rather down
Sadness unsurprisingly has his face stuck in a frown
Ignorance told a joke, but completely missed the point
Misery looked quite gloomy, but didn't disappoint

Nervousness' right eye can't seem to stop twitching
And he keeps scratching both his legs, apparently they're itching

Satisfaction fell asleep and drooled over my shoulder
Naïvety whispered to me that she wished that she was older
Gullibility gladly accepted candy from Spite
Righteousness and Deceitfulness got into a fight

Joy and bliss were supposed to sit next to me,
But they both missed the train - Bliss “really had to pee”

People who know me even a little, know I like Edgar Allan Poe a lot. He's one of my all time favorite writers, actually. So I wanted to draw him, and so I started drawing a gloomy fellow:

But then I realized a gloomy Poe is kinda boring, because that's exactly what you'd expect, isn't it? There are a million pictures like that. So I drew a happy Poe instead:

The Secret of Kells

I've finally watched The Secret of Kells.

Wow. Just, wow. I mean wow. The artwork in this movie is just beautiful. No, it's more than beautiful, it's stylized, brilliant and gorgeous.

I love everything about it, the colour, backgrounds, character design. Everything works perfect together.

It's like something from a children book. Mixed with the artwork from the actual book of kells. With traces of Stephen Silver, Genndy Tartakovsky, Jeffery Agala, Craig McCracken, Mike Krahulik... I could go on and name drop all my favorite artist actually.

But I don't need to. Just LOOK at it.

Turning to cruel sources

Colored my weird, half naked, slave girl... thing. I actually inked it with the intent to try a entirely different way of coloring. Which I did:

I suck at this, kinda. But I can tell that it CAN look good, I just need to practice that particular way of coloring. The problem is I need to do it in Photoshop. I'm not used to coloring in Photoshop. And I don't know how to go about in the process, the way I shaded this one was very tedious, and the end result was terrible viewed in 100%.

By the way, I've ordered a brand new computer. So I'm hoping that I'll soon be able to work without lag and all that. I dream about being able to ustream properly.

Remember when I said the singer in Creature Feature was cool? You should, it was only one post ago. I'll admit I have somewhat of a man-crush on him now, he has that certain handsomeness that only a select few succeeds at pulling off. Gris Grimly does it. And now, as said, Curtis RX too.
